Interesting that only a few pages in Fitzpatrick notes that arguably Paterno's greatest accomplishment is that Penn State football has never had a major scandal. Granted, the book was published a few months before the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke, but it in hindsight, Fitzpatrick lays the groundwork for why Paterno could have hid such an appalling string of actions: his never ceasing arrogance and desire for one thing-winning. Although Fitzpatrick may not have known it at the time of publication, this book describes very well the true type of man Paterno was: a selfish coach that cared more about the football program's winning percentage than the character of the people that made it.

Frank Fitzpatrick takes us on a journey through Joe Paterno's upbringing until the cusp of the 2011 season, showing us some of the intricacies of Joe Pa's mind as he struggles from an arrogant youngster to a legendary coach. For many who never knew the man beyond his win/loss record, this book is a definite eyeopener. If you've read other biographies about him or are simply curious, I don't think you'll be disappointed how much Joe Paterno's story and beliefs makes you think about yourself and where you stand in the world around us. A definite must read for anyone wanting to understand the man behind the legend.
