Mr. Magee decides that he and Dee should try skiing. He rigs up a basket for Dee to ride in on his back and heads for a small hill near their home to try things out before driving to the mountains. Skiing proves a bit challenging for Mr. Magee, especially when a moose and a ravine get in his way.Oh my goodness, Van Dusen's illustrations in this are amazing and hilarious, and it's all about the way he uses perspective. It's artistic comedic genius. Another wild adventure for Mr. Magee and Dee, but we'd expect nothing less of them now. Once again, keep an eye out for the milkman's truck sneaking into the story.

The foundational struggle with skiing - learning how to steer! This book had a very “Dr. Suess meets Puppy Dog Pals” feel. If you haven’t seen Puppy Dog Pals, I can’t help you. My kids were cracking up by the end of this one!

Kudos to Mr. Magee, always getting into trouble, but never quitting adventure or the outdoors. Love it. I'm glad Van Dusen is more than an excellent artist- he can write too!

Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee is a cute book that illustrates the story of Mr. Magee and his dog Dee who go out on a hill to learn how to ski. The story has elements of adventure and excitement when Mr. Magee and Dee run into a moose. This book could be used in a second grade classroom encouraging vocabulary development with words such as "succulent" and "ravine." After reading this story, we could discuss adventures and what to do if you get into a scary situation and the importance of staying close to parents or other friends and not to wander into the wilderness alone. Personal Response - This book is enjoyable because it illustrates a man and his dog going on an adventure to learn how to ski. I particularly like this because I myself am a skier and snowboarder and so naturally learning how to ski and understanding you will fall and you will hit bumps was very relate able to my own life. Purposes:Read-aloud for second grade. This book could be used for enrichment/enjoyment.-With vocabulary like "succulent" and "ravine", the instructor can ask students what they might think those terms mean using context clues.-Discussing adventures and sports. -This could be an opener to the idea of going on an adventure and that trips aren't always perfect and learning how to deal with a situation when it doesn't go your way.

Recently I read Learning to ski with Mr. Magee. In this book there are two main characters, Mr. Magee and Dee the dog. Early on a winter day Mr. Magee and Dee wanted to go skiing, so they went up to Mt. Snow. At the bottom of the hill there was a moose just out of sight. At the end of the hill Mr. Magee slid under the moose but the tips of his ski's snagged on a log and hung suspended above a ravine. Read the book to find out what happens next.I thought that the pictures in this book were good and told a lot of the story. Also i think that the pictures are what makes this book a good book because especially at the end there are alot of parts in this book that i think would not make sence if the pictures were there.I would recommend this book from kindergarden to adults because its not a hard book to get but its a book that you would have fun reading because of the way Christ Van Dusen rhymes and the way he uses words like ZIP or ZING. I liked this book because it was not hard to read and its easy to stay with the story.

One winter morning, Mr.Magee and his dog Dee decide to learn how to ski. But a pleasant downhill ski turns into a wacky adeventure that gets them stuck in a slippery situation with a moose, "With a snort the moose leapt! The skis went SPRING!They popped in the air with a ZIP and a ZING!And up like a rocket shot DEE and MACGEE..."The lively and funny rhyming are a like a blast to my childhood of when I would enjoy Dr. Seuss's witty rhymes. But, this book can be even more entertaining than a Dr. Seuss book, because of their hilarious and perfectly drawn pictures of Dee and Macgee.

They decide to go to the hill across the street, but in the middle of skiing he runs into an unexpected guest.I would recommend this book to any ages. It is fun for the whole family. It is hilarious and the illustrations are amazing.

I am such a sucker for a beautifully written rhyme! I couldn't read this book in my head, I had to read it out loud because the rhyming was so great. And the story was cute, too. Mr. Magee and his dog, Dee, have some skiing mishaps but everything turns out okay in the end. I just want to read this at a storytime so bad!

My first grader loved this book. Mr. Magee decides to teach himself to ski, but he is not very good at it. The message to kids is that if they aren't very good at something, maybe they could take lessons or learn more before they dive right in.

A very charming poem of a man taking his dog out to give a new pair of skis a try. He quickly learns that skiing is rather tricky and gets in (and out) of a tight spot with the help of a moose.Excellent illustrations.

This book was funny. However, I was a little disappointed with the ending. I was hoping that it would be the kind of book you can read to kids before taking them on a ski trip - to get them enthusiastic and excited about skiing, but with this ending I'm not so sure...

Well, Van Dusen is my latest favorite--love the retro look to all of his books--so, naturally, I loved this book. He has a few formulas that all of his books fall into but when they're so much fun to read? Who cares?

Slapstick skiing adventure in rhyme. The impeccable pacing and hilarious, vivid illustrations (the moose! the one where they are upside down!) make this an excellent read aloud. Highly recommended for ages 4-6.

Chris Van Dusen's brightly colored illustrations bring this silly story to life. Also teaching the valuable lesson that Skiing Lessons are a good investment before attempting to tackle anything more challenging than the Bunny Slope.
